Understanding Asthma

Asthma is a disease that affects your lungs and airways, and your life. While living with asthma isn't easy, understanding how it affects your body can make managing this disease simpler than you might think. Here's what can happen during an asthma attack:

  • The lining of your lungs and airways becomes inflamed (swollen)
  • Muscles around your airways tighten, causing your airways to narrow
  • Your body produces too much mucus, which can clog your airways
  • Your airways become overly sensitive to irritants

All of this limits air flowing into and out of your lungs, and makes it hard to breathe. This results in asthma symptoms: coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and tightness in the chest.

No one is sure what causes asthma, but it is known that this chronic (long-term) disease often runs in families. Almost 20 million Americans have asthma. While there is no cure for asthma, the symptoms may be managed with proper medication and a few lifestyle changes.
