About Asthma
3 Important Facts
There are 3 important facts every parent of a child with asthma needs to know:
- Your child's airways can be inflamed (swollen) — even when he or she is NOT having an asthma episode or attack. More about airway inflammation.
- Rescue inhalers (also known as "fast-acting" inhalers) provide quick relief for your child's sudden asthma symptoms. But a rescue inhaler does NOT treat the inflammation in your child's airways that can lead to asthma attacks. More about Rescue Inhalers.
- If your child's doctor believes that using a rescue inhaler alone is not enough to manage your child's asthma symptoms, the doctor may consider adding a maintenance medicine. A maintenance inhaler does NOT replace a rescue inhaler for sudden symptoms. Maintenance inhalers can help prevent and reduce the swelling in your child's airways that can lead to asthma attacks. More about maintenance inhalers.
