Know the facts (not the myths) about Inhaled Corticosteroids

FACT: Inhaled corticosteroids are NOT the same as anabolic steroids often associated with abuse by athletes.

Corticosteroids, the medicine in maintenance inhalers including ASMANEX^® 110 mcg, are very different from an anabolic steroid - the steroid that some athletes misuse.

Inhaled corticosteroids have been safely prescribed for 50 years to help reduce and prevent swelling in lungs and airways.

The "other" kind of steroids are used to increase muscle mass, strength and endurance. Inhaled corticosteroids do not do this.

FACT: Inhaled corticosteroids are a preferred medicine for managing persistent asthma among medical experts

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health has an Expert Panel that prepares asthma clinical guidelines for doctors. The NHLBI says that among single agent, long-term maintenance medications for persistent asthma, inhaled corticosteroids are the most effective.
