Maintenance Inhalers
Maintenance inhalers help to PREVENT asthma symptoms before they start.
Maintenance inhalers come in many forms, including long-acting beta agonists and inhaled corticosteroids. When used every day, maintenance inhalers help your child avoid symptoms and attacks. They help prevent or reduce swelling in your child's lungs and airways. They also help decrease mucus production, so your child's airways can stay clearer.
Although it is not known exactly how corticosteroids work, these actions may contribute to how they help manage your child's asthma symptoms.
Over time, maintenance inhalers can help make your child's airways less sensitive to asthma triggers.
Maintenance inhalers, such as inhaled corticosteroids, help to treat the inflammation (swelling) that make your child's lungs sensitive to asthma triggers. They do NOT replace a rescue inhaler for sudden symptoms.
